What Is the Third Eye Chakra?

And what does it do for you?

The Third Eye Chakra, or Sixth Chakra, is located between your brows and above your nose at the center of your forehead. In Sanskrit, this energy center is known as “Ajna” and is known for its connection to our memory, perception, intuition, and our ability for self-reflection. This chakra caters to our psychological skills and is connected to the pineal and pituitary glands in our brain. It allows us to see beyond what our physical eyes see and allows us to seek wisdom and manifest our existence. The Third Eye Chakra permits us to perceive truth and experience both the inner and outer worlds. It also allows us to be aware of our place in the universe. Through Ajna, we can see our significance and experience the guidance of that gut feeling and intuition.

Being the mind center, the Sixth Chakra is where we determine what we consider our truths to be. In various cases, a negative memory can manifest into a tangible reality for someone in the present. For example, a person who was told they were messy or irresponsible as a child may grow into someone with those same traits because that memory has shaped their reality as well as their identity.

Here are some helpful facts you should take note of:

  • The Sixth Chakra is a Light Element
  • Its symbol is the lotus flower and an upside-down triangle
  • Healing stones include: Amethyst, Lapis, or Iolite
  • Its sense is thought

Overactivity in the Third Eye Chakra

It’s important to keep this chakra balanced, your mind, body, and spirit will thank you later!

If your Third Eye Chakra is overactive you can feel very disoriented or overwhelmed. This happens when one opens their Third Eye Chakra without having overall balance or support from other chakras. The feeling is often compared to the scattered feeling of having too much caffeine. Some other physical manifestations of an overactive Third Eye Chakra include vision problems, headaches, insomnia, nausea, sleep disorders, and sinus issues. Non-physical symptoms of overactivity in the Third Eye Chakra include difficulty concentrating, anxiety, depression, mental fog, paranoia, or hallucinations in extreme cases.

Problems with this chakra reflect our hesitance to look within ourselves and confront our deepest fears. Being afraid of facing the truth about ourselves clouds our reasoning and allows doubt and the fear of criticism or judgment from others to seep in. When our Third Eye Chakra is overactive, the imbalance causes us to experience negative emotions such as jealousy, anger, and bitterness that set us back in the process of healing.

In addition to restoring balance to your third eye chakra, it’s also important that you balance your lower chakras to support it. Having a harmonious balance of all seven chakras will open you up to the possibility of a happy and fulfilling life.

Being mindful enough to take steps towards healing yourself is a big step, and one of the best things you can do to restore balance. It can be difficult to decide what techniques to use, but luckily there are many options out there to pick from!

Diet

It’s especially important to tend to your body with the kinds of foods you eat to promote healing in the Third Eye Chakra. Foods like eggplant, plums, blueberries, purple cabbage, which are of a purple hue can help to improve your Third Eye Chakra’s function.

Foods that have high concentrations of Omega-3 fatty acids are also very good for healing. This includes fish like salmon, shrimp, mackerel or trout, and vegetables such as seaweed, algae, chia seeds, or edamame. To help with relaxation and mental clarity, eating dark chocolate is a particularly good idea.

Therapeutic Activities

The Third Eye Chakra is very involved with our imagination and creativity. Connecting to our senses of creativity through writing or drawing and painting can be a very therapeutic process that helps restore balance to our Sixth Chakra. You could also practice guided visualizations or dreamwork to access places for deep personal growth. Some other therapeutic activities include meditation and “nadi shodhana” or alternate nostril breathing, both of which allow us to experience a deeper level of consciousness.

Energy Healing

Energy healing is another way to restore balance to your Third Eye Chakra. Practices such as Reiki, a treatment that consists of channeling energy into the body through touch, promote healing and relaxation that can be especially helpful for your Sixth Chakra. Other forms of energy healing include aromatherapy or sound therapy. Sound therapies can be helpful in healing your Sixth Chakra because of the high vibrational frequencies that align with the frequencies of the Third Eye Chakra. You could also use essential oils such as rosemary, sandalwood, marjoram, juniper, or frankincense to anoint your forehead (the location of your Third Eye Chakra).

Exercise

Exercising regularly can go a long way for restoring balance to your Third Eye Chakra. Incorporating yoga into your exercise can also be a good way to approach healing. Some yoga poses that are specifically helpful in improving the condition of your third eye chakra include:

  • Downward Dog
  • Bridge
  • Lotus Pose
  • Plow Pose
  • Child’s Pose
  • Shoulder Stands
  • Forward Bends
  • Tree Pose
  • Eagle Pose

Yoga and exercise not only help target healing the Third Eye Chakra, but they also help you towards leading a healthier, more mindful, and enriching life.

Healing Stones

Healing Stones with the same vibrational frequencies or color as your Sixth Chakra can also be helpful in healing and restoring balance to the overactive chakra. Some healing stones that fit this description include:

  • Lapis Lazuli
  • Amethyst
  • Quartz
  • Moonstone
  • Opal
  • Labradorite
  • Purple Fluorite

Affirmations

Affirmations can also be an effective way to achieve balance in your Third Eye Chakra. In fact, Affirmations are one of the most powerful ways to balance your Third Eye Chakra because they carry out the process of our thoughts creating our reality. There are some specific affirmations you can use to heal your Third Eye Chakra and they are as follows:

  • “I nurture my spirit”
  • “I am in touch with my inner guidance”
  • “I listen to the wisdom of my elders”
  • “I love and accept myself”
  • “My life moves effortlessly”
  • “I am the source of my truth and my love”
  • “I forgive the past and learn what was there for me to learn”
  • “I know that all is well in my world”
  • “I am at peace”
  • “I listen to my deepest wisdom”
  • “I forgive myself”
  • “I am connected to the wisdom of the universe”
  • “I am wise, intuitive, and connected with my inner guide”

A common misconception of the chakra healing process is that it’s something you have to go through alone which isn’t true! There are tons of resources online that offer advice, and qualified people that are more than willing to offer guidance to those struggling with overactive Third Eye Chakras.

The journey towards achieving balance in your chakras isn’t linear, or in one specific cookie-cutter pattern, so it’s important to remember that your path may look different than those around you. Don’t be discouraged by your process, instead, try to remember what it is that you’re working towards and the life that you’ll be leading once you start learning how to balance your Third Eye Chakra.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
