How to Fund Your Fertility

Different options to help you pay for your fertility

Radio stations love to give away free swag: T-shirts, hats, you name it. But one radio station is going above and beyond with their giveaways. Recently a radio station in Florida made headlines by offering a free cycle of in vitro fertilization to one lucky couple.

Couples entered the contest by submitting a video to the station. Unfortunately, the deadline for submissions is past, and finalists will be announced December 4. However, if you are struggling to get pregnant but can't afford fertility treatments, don't fret. You don't have to wait for another radio contest. Instead, take a look at some suggestions on how to fund your fertility.

Research, research, research

Prices vary greatly among fertility clinics. Make sure you call and do your research before settling on one clinic. Remember, that you shouldn't just look for the cheapest options. A cheaper clinic might actually cost you more if it is too far away from your house (remember IVF treatments take place over several weeks).

Apply for a grant

Radio stations aren't the only fertility guardian angels. Some foundations offer grants to people struggling with infertility. Check out this page on grants and see if you qualify.

Appeal to your support system

Nobody relishes asking people they love for money. But your parents might consider gifting fertility treatments as part of an estate-planning strategy. In a 2012 U.S. News & World Report article, New Jersey wealth manager Robert Dowling said, "If someone wanted to reduce their estate and gift it to their child, they could pay that medical bill directly to the facility." While this isn't an option for every family dynamic, it might be for yours.

Look into refund programs

Unfortunately, undergoing fertility treatments does not guarantee you a baby. Many clinics offer refunds if you don't conceive after several cycles of IVF. While they probably won't give you all your money back, they may pay back part of the cost of treatments. It should be noted that if you dealt with complications, they are less likely to provide refunds. Find out what the refund policies are for the clinic you are interested in.

Radio station B103.9's latest giveaway is going to make one lucky couple's fertility dreams come true. For the rest of us, there are plenty of options to afford fertility treatments on a budget. With some research, positive thinking, and, of course, a little bit of luck, you can forge your own unique path to a baby.
