Frequent Night Shifts Can Lead to Lower Fertility in Men

Factors that take a toll on sleep can cause multiple issues

Your chances of fathering children may lessen thanks to irregular work hours and a diminishing sex drive. Losing regular sleep is known to possibly lead to obesity, heart disease and various disorders.

The average amount of sleep a human should get per night is between seven to eight hours. Unfortunately, many people work irregular hours, have unreasonable deadlines as well as many other factors that take a toll on sleep.

According to the Director of IVF and Infertility at Fortis La Femme Hospital in Delhi and the Secretary General of the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India, men who work night shift and lack sleep may have urinary problems and erectile dysfunction.

The reason for this is that a fluctuating schedule can lower testosterone levels in men. As we all know, testosterone is a hormone which helps fuel a man's sex drive and a reduction in the level of this can result in poor-quality semen. So now on top of plummeting fertility rates in men due to poor diets and lifestyle, men have to watch their sleep schedule and make sure they get a their regular seven to eight hours in every night.

Those working in night shift should try to avoid doing so several nights in a row, avoid frequent rotating shifts, keep their workplace brightly lit, avoid bright lights on the way home from work, and limit their caffeine intake.
