Beating cancer is a tremendous feat for anyone to conquer. Unfortunately, many cancer treatments make it impossible for people to later conceive a child naturally. With enough financial resources, some patients diagnosed with cancer will seek egg or sperm retrieval and cryopreservation but these processes are rarely covered by insurance. Dr. Steve Xu and Dr. Jessica Walter, both resident physicians at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine discuss the issues facing cancer patients and what legislators need to do now to ensure that cancer patients can have their own children following treatment.
